This is the first in a series of videos depicting the Norwich Area in the 1980’s.

It begins in 1983. If you take the various routes out of Norwich, the area covered will be bounded by Wroxham, Gt. Yarmouth, Lowestoft, Diss & Brandon.

This volume includes Norwich Thorpe, Norwich Thorpe Junction, Lowestoft, Crown Point Open Day 1983, Wymondham (Main Line & Branch), Kimberley Park, Eccles Road, Trowse Yard, Trowse Lower Junction & Harford Bridges.

The action begins at Norwich in 1983 with Thorpe Junction, Norwich Passenger Yard & Norwich Goods Yard Signal Boxes all still in place.

At Wymondham we see both Branch & Main Line action including 31292 shunting the Ketton cement yard & 31316 calls with the Norwich – Whitemoor to pick up traffic that had earlier come off the Branch.

There was still a Norwich – Liverpool St. via Cambridge service in the 1980’s.This service was worked by Class 47s & the Norwich – Birmingham N. S. service was in the charge of Class 31s, although a 47 often stood in. The Norwich – Ely service was in the hands of Class 101 Metro Cammell & Class 105 Cravens D.M.Us. A variety of these trains are seen at Wymondham.

This series of videos is not just about motive power. It also captures the Railway, its features & the people who made it all work.  Handing over the token at Wymondham & the Guard climbing down to open the gates at Kimberley Park are now all part of Railway history.

We visit Crown Point Open Day in 1983 to see the vast array of Motive Power on show.
A second visit to Norwich in 1984 shows the fine array of semaphore signals seen from the platform. There is lots of action in this section including station pilot 03180. Among all the comings & goings; drivers, shunters & cleaners go about their every day duties. Trains are seen passing Trowse Yard & Trowse Lower Junction signal boxes then finally passing over & under the fine bridge at Harford.
